Signing is not only graphics. It should also be more than pretty typography, a decorative afterthought or an addition put up merely to satisfy building regulations.
The design of a signing system is a multi-disciplinary activity that includes architectural planning, typographical design and research into industrial technology and human behaviour. At its simplest, a sign should answer the question “where am I going and how do I get there?”. But signs must do much more. They are there not only to inform, but also to warn, direct and regulate.
By analysing the problems of legibility, weathering, vandalism and lack of coherence, we establish the criteria upon which a cohesive system for design, material, manufacture and installation can be based.
